Methamphetamine Abuse in Florida

DEA Assessment:

  • The Tampa Bay area is the focal point of all methamphetamine distribution and abuse within Florida.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

4.1% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
0.9% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.4% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

5% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

5% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Florida involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 98 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

806 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
2.1% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

No retailer may knowingly sell more than 9 grams or 3 packages of single entity PSE, EPH or PPA products; Single entity PSE, EPH and PPA products must be maintained behind a checkout counter; Owners or primary operators of retail establishments selling PSE, EPH and PPA products may not allow an employee to engage in the retail sale of such products unless the employee has completed an employee training program that includes at a minimum, basic instruction on state and federal regulations relating to sale and distribution.8
