Methamphetamine Abuse in Georgia

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine continues to increase in popularity and has become more prevalent throughout Georgia, leading to a significant number of arrests.
  • There has been an increase in the availability of ICE, in the Atlanta metropolitan area along with locally produced methamphetamine.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

5.5% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
0.9% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.5% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

6% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

23% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Georgia involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 117 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

4264 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
12% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

3 package / 9 gram limit for all pseudo ephedrine and ephedrine products; Active ingredient products may only be sold from behind a counter or other barrier so that such products are not directly accessible by the public but only by a retail store employee or agent; Such firm or person must maintain copies of all invoices, receipts, and other records. 8
