Methamphetamine Abuse in Iowa

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine is the principal drug of concern in all parts of Iowa.
  • Despite some abatement through State regulations placed on precursor chemicals, local small toxic laboratories continue to be a significant problem throughout Iowa.
  • Law enforcement agencies throughout the state expend a large number of man-hours to combat the problem.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

6.4% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
2.1% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
1.1% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

4% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

63% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Iowa involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 303 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

5,533 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
20% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

No person may purchase more than 7500 mg of PSE per 30 days from a pharmacy or retailer unless the person has a prescription; Purchaser must present government-issued photo ID card to retailer prior to purchasing a PSE product and retailer must require purchaser to prevent the government issued photo ID prior to purchase; Logbook to be kept for 12 months from the date of last entry.8
