Methamphetamine Abuse in Michigan

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine continues to be available in the state of Michigan.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

4.1% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
1% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.4% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

4% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

4% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Michigan involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 200 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

567 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
1% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

Retailer may not sell more than 2 packages or 48 capsules in a single transaction; Retailer may not sell a nonexempt product to purchaser under 18 years old; Seller must require purchaser to produce a valid photo ID showing purchaser's name and date of birth; Retailers must maintain a log or record detailing the sale of a product described under subsection for each nonexempt product sold; Nonexempt PSE and EPH products must be stored in one of the following manners: Behind a counter where public is not permitted, OR Within a locked case so that the customer must ask store employee for assistance to access, OR Within 20 feet of a counter in combination with one of the following: Allowing attendant to view products in an unobstructed manner.8
