Methamphetamine Abuse in Missouri

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine is widely available throughout all parts of the state.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

7.1% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
2.8% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.9% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

6% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

37% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Missouri involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 1,268 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

6,296 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
14% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

9 grams per person per 30-day period for all products except liquid or liquid filled gel Capsule; Single entity PSE products and combination EPH or PSE products may only be sold by a registered pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician; Purchasers not known to the pharmacist or technician completing sale must furnish photo ID showing purchasers date of birth; Must maintain a written or electronic log of each transaction; Products not sold pursuant to a prescription must be offered for sale only from behind a pharmacy counter where the public is not permitted.8
