Methamphetamine Abuse in North Carolina

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine cases have been on the rise in urbanized parts of North Carolina.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

3.0% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
0.6% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.2% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

6.5% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

13% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in North Carolina involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 189 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

410 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
2% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

No person may purchase or deliver more than two packages or six grams of any nonexempt PSE or EPH product per transaction unless sold pursuant to a prescription; Purchases limited to no more than three packages or nine grams of any nonexempt PSE or EPH products per 30 days unless sold pursuant to a valid prescription; Unless sold upon prescription, nonexempt PSE or EPH products may not be sold to anyone under 18 years old; Retailer must require every purchaser of any nonexempt PSE or EPH product to furnish photo ID. Retailers must maintain the record of disposition for a period of two years from the date of each transaction; Nonexempt single entity and combination PSE and EPH products in tablet or caplet form must be stored and sold from behind a pharmacy counter.8
