The Montague County Child Welfare Board is fighting the increasing use of methamphetamine in the county.

In October, the board began presenting a series of educational programs to children in grades six to 12 in every school district in the county. This week, Bowie Junior and Senior High School classes were the last to have the program presented.

David Lawson, chairman of the Montague County Child Welfare Board, said for the past several years Montague County has had more cases of confirmed child abuse for the size of its population than most of the other counties in the state. In the majority of the cases, some type of drug abuse is a factor, and the drug of choice in Montague County is methamphetamine.

ìWhen you see that 99 percent of abuse involves some type of drug, we decided why not go back and look at the root cause, or at least one of them. Poverty, social factors and other issues come into play also,î Lawson said.
