Overview
The Rural Law Enforcement Methamphetamine Initiative is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is led by Strategic Applications International (SAI), in partnership with BJA, to address the unique challenges of rural jurisdictions in fighting Methamphetamine production, distribution, and abuse.
Why apply?
Four reasons: additional manpower to support planning and implementation of statewide plans, a comprehensive statewide evaluation, time to develop and refocus on a statewide plan, and expert training and technical assistance.

Selected states will receive:
- Onsite support from a fully funded, dedicated Rural State Meth Coordinator. Coordinators will be employed by SAI (through BJA funding) and are responsible for convening, developing, and implementing strategies within their state. SAI is available to help transition these Coordinators to state funded positions by the end of the Initiative, if possible and desired.
- A comprehensive statewide assessment which will ascertain strengths, needs, and opportunities related to rural law enforcement and meth. The results will shape the content of the National Rural Methamphetamine Summit and each state's action plan. SAI is partnering with the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) to develop assessment tools as well as conduct structured interviews and focus groups to assess the needs of the participating states
- Full sponsorship to attend the National Rural Methamphetamine Summit (including travel, lodging, and registration) in June 2010 for the state action team. The purpose is to assemble rural state action teams to review research and evidence-based best practices, identify commonalities and differences between rural states, prioritize training and technical assistance needs, and initiate a state action plan. [Note: state action teams must be assembled prior to the Summit.]
- Customized training and technical assistance to create and implement (or enhance an existing) a statewide methamphetamine action plan. State plans will be developed from the Summit. Technical assistance will be managed by the Rural State Coordinators and available through, but not limited to, the following methods: 1) on-site technical assistance; 2) webinars; 3) web-based clearinghouse, distribution of information via website and listserv including SAI's www.methpedia.org; 4) regional meetings; and 5) distance learning (using CDs and DVDs).
